Assess Your Environments

We spend our days meticulously analyzing oral environments, but how often do we turn that clinical eye toward our own surroundings? Longevity in this profession requires a 24-hour perspective on how we position our bodies.

The Work Environment

Look closely at your working environment setup. Is your equipment working for you, or are you twisting your body to treat your patient?

  • Identify Triggers: Note the exact moment a twinge begins. Is it during a specific quadrant? Is it the reach for the overhead light or the angle of your wrist?
  • Evaluate Workspace: Notice your workspace and the area you operate in. Do you have enough room to move around the patient in all clock positions? Does your dental nurse or assistant have enough space to move around the surgery / operatory? Does the room have any trip hazards? Eliminating trip hazards will significantly lower your stress levels.
  • Evaluate Light Levels: Is your space well-lit? Do you have enough natural light? While you can often do very little to change this apart from swapping light bulbs, it is a crucial factor to notice during an initial job interview.

The Home Environment

The habits that follow you out of the clinic are just as vital as your chairside posture.

  • The "Second Shift": How do you sit while you are at home? How do you maintain your posture? Are you holding your phone higher when reading it? These "invisible" habits can reinforce the strains of the day or act as a barrier to recovery.
  • Recovery Patterns: Identify which movements or stretches at home provide genuine relief versus those that merely mask fatigue.

The goal is clarity. By identifying the specific triggers in both environments, you can stop guessing and start implementing the precise habits that preserve your career.
