The Signal You Can’t Afford to Ignore

THE SIGNAL IN THE SILENCE

In dentistry, we are trained to spot the smallest indicators of disease— a shadow on a radiograph, a millimeter of recession, or bleeding on probing indicating gum disease. We tell our patients: "Healthy gums don’t bleed." It is a clear, diagnostic truth.

It is time to apply that same clinical thing to yourself.

A Healthy Body Doesn’t Hurt

If you are a dental professional experiencing recurring pain, the first step is the acknowledgment of that PAIN. Chronic discomfort is not a "part of the job" or a badge of a hard day's work; it is a physiological red flag.

  • It can feel isolating to be in PAIN. You are not alone. At my last webinar from last year for BDSHT ( British Dental Society for Dental Hygienists & Dental Therapists ) 93% of participants have experienced pain during their career - including myself. Also, 75% of the participants were in the PAIN during that presentation! STAGGERING, I know!!
  • Listen to your BODY: Pain is your body’s internal diagnostic tool. If you are in pain your body is trying to tell you something
  • Acknowledge the Source: Ignoring the signal doesn't make it disappear. It simply allows the underlying condition to progress.
  • Respect the Threshold: When you first feel a twinge in your neck or a dull ache in your wrist, your body is compensating for poor mechanics. You can still perform your clinical duties, but you are "borrowing" energy and structural integrity from your joints and ligaments to get through the day.
Once you cross the threshold, the damage becomes structural rather than just functional. This is the point where a minor ache turns into a repetitive strain injury (RSI) or chronic inflammation that no longer resolves with a night of rest.

Do not ignore the signal

Your longevity in this profession depends on your ability to hear what your body is screaming before it loses its voice.
